Twenty-eight women turned in under-par scores during Round One at Taco Bell Natchez Classic

(Natchez, MS) –  There weren't a lot of misses in Mississippi for round one at the Taco Bell Natchez Classic. With 28 women turning in red scores, the birdies were flying almost as much as the gnats at Beau Pre Country Club. Although the tree-lined fairways could be viewed as intimidating while hitting off the tee, three players are tied for the lead sitting at 5-under par.

Mohan Du (Orlando,FL), Erika Smith (Orlando, FL), and Siyan Chen (Hangzhou, China) all carded a 67 in Wednesday’s round. Du started off strong with birdie-ing two out of her first three holes. She then went on to birdie hole six before turning in a 3-under front nine score.

“My ball striking was pretty consistent today and then I think my mental game was good because I just stayed patient,” said Du. “But the greens were a lot faster than they looked and some of the pin placements were tough.”

Du followed her front nine with a 2-under on the back, securing her spot in T1 heading into the second round.

Another standout of the round was Smith who turned in the most circles of the day at 7 birdies. Despite her double bogey on hole three, the Florida native found her way to the top of the leaderboard after turning in a bogey-free back nine score of a 5-under 31.
